The Rathayatra of Ramakrishna Math Balaram Mandir has a rich history associated with the Ramakrishna Order. Sri Ramakrishna participated in this divine festival on two occasions: on July 3, 1884, during Punaryatra day, and on July 14, 1885, during Rathayatra day. These events are noted by Swami Saradananda in "Sri Ramakrishna Leela Prasanga." Additionally, it is important to highlight that Sri Sri Thakur attended other Rathayatras at Balaram Mandir starting from 1881 and in subsequent years.
The vibrant atmosphere at Ramakrishna Math, Balaram Mandir, came alive with the joyous celebrations of Ratha Yatra and Punaryatra in 2025. These festivals, deeply rooted in spiritual traditions, brought together thousands of devotees in a shared expression of devotion and community.
On June 27, 2025, the much-anticipated Ratha Yatra of Sri Sri Jagannath Mahaprabhu was celebrated with great enthusiasm. The majestic festival was inaugurated by Revered Swami Vimalatmananda, the Vice-President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, who pulled the magnificent chariot at 3:30 pm. This vibrant event not only celebrated the divine but also strengthened the bonds of community among the attendees.
The day was marked by special worship of Sri Ramakrishna Deva and Sri Jagannath Mahaprabhu, accompanied by the spiritual sounds of Vedic chanting and hymns. Devotees participated actively, offering pushpanjali (flower offerings) and witnessing Aratrikam (aarti), which added to the sanctity of the occasion.
Adding depth to the spiritual experience, devotional keertan was performed by Swami Shivadhishananda from Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur, while the Sarada Kalikeertan Samity from Kankurgachhi shared melodious bhajans. A sitar recital by Sri Koushik Shil filled the air with divine melodies, enchanting the audience. Over seventeen thousand devotees graced the occasion, and prasadam was joyfully served, making it a day to remember.
Following the grand Ratha Yatra, the Punaryatra was celebrated on July 5, 2025, continuing the spirit of togetherness and devotion. This event was guided by Revered Swami Jnanavratananda, the Treasurer of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math. At 3:30 pm, he led the pulling of the ratha, invoking blessings from the divine.
The program featured soulful devotional songs performed by Swami Stutananda and other talented devotees, capturing the hearts of everyone present. Readings from the Srimad Bhagavatam by Sri Achintya Mukhopadhyaya enriched the spiritual discourse, fostering a deeper connection with the teachings of the scriptures. The day was further enhanced by a mesmerizing flute recital from Sri Ashok Kumar Karmakar, creating an ambiance of serenity and reverence.
Once again, the event witnessed an impressive footfall of around seventeen thousand devotees, all united in their devotion. Prasadam was served, allowing everyone to partake in the joy and blessings of the day.
Both the Ratha Yatra and Punaryatra at Ramakrishna Math were not just events; they were celebrations of faith, community, and spirituality. Such gatherings remind us of the power of devotion and the joy of coming together in worship. As we reflect on these occasions, we carry forward the spirit of love and unity inspired by Sri Sri Jagannath Mahaprabhu and Sri Ramakrishna Deva, ensuring that the flame of devotion continues to shine brightly in our hearts.
Join us next year for another round of spiritual festivities, and may the blessings of the Holy Trio and Sri Jagannath Mahaprabhu be with us always!
